ALFRED MCKETHAN PARK
(Pine Island)

"Pine Island was first connected to the mainland by a highway built in 1925. No expected improvements developed. This island had a beautiful stand of tall longleaf yellow pines, but during World War II this pine grove was destroyed  with the erection of a radar station. In 1949, the road to Pine Island was further  improved, and part of the property was given to the state and county for the  establishment of a park and beach. Most of the remainder of the island was  cut into building lots with a number of nice beach homes resulting.  The beach and park have added greatly to the recreational facilities of the county."
