The Board of County Commissioners for Hernando County formed a partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau to assist them with the local expertise necessary to ensure a complete population count for Census 2000. The U.S. Census Bureau is mandated by the Constitution to take a census every ten years counting all residents in the United States for the apportionment of the House of Representatives. Redistricting at the state and local levels is also based upon the census data. Census Day was Saturday April 1, 2000.
So why take a census? Approximately $180 billion in government funds are allocated based upon census data. Businesses are better able to produce the products wanted by the public because census numbers help industry to locate potential markets thus reducing financial risk. Organizations in both the private and public sectors use the data for planning purposes and strategies.
The goal of Census 2000 was an accurate, cost-effective effort to see that every household received, filled out, and returned a census questionnaire. Approximately 5 of 6 households received a "short form" questionnaire in the mail asking, for example, about the gender of residents, the age of residents, and whether they rent or own their home. Approximately 1 of 6 households received the "long form" asking additional questions about income of residents, where they work, the education they attained, or the vehicles available in their household.
In Hernando County, new traffic analysis zone boundaries (TAZ) were submitted to the Census Bureau based upon county growth and the Suncoast Parkway. In 1998, new split census tracts (CT) were proposed and published to this website. The Census Bureau has also sought and received local help as to the nature and extent of unincorporated communities called Census Designated Places. (CDP) Unlike 1990, a Local Census Office (LCO) was opened here in Brooksville to serve Citrus, Hernando, and parts of Pasco County. It was located in a strip center off Clinton Boulevard near the Cortez Boulevard bypass.
