On average, our department receives over 600 mosquito-related complaints and requests for service throughout the year. Another 100 or so are attributed to bees, mowing, and misc. other services we provide. It is not at all unusual for our field techs to visit a residence and find the problem to be home-grown mosquitoes, i.e. CONTAINER BREEDERS (see Mosquito Habitats).
The threat of West Nile and other mosquito-borne diseases make mosquito control a hot topic. Our department does a great job considering its limited manpower and budget. We could do an even better job if residents pitched in and patrolled their property and surrounding areas. This would not only help nip their mosquito problem in the bud, but it would free up our staff to treat problem areas residents cannot control.
It’s a win, win situation, but the only way people will know they have the power to do something, is by making them aware of what they can do!!
