Hernando County Traffic Engineering -
What YOU can do to Improve Traffic Safety. . . .

Hernando County experienced 2,701 traffic crashes for 2001. There were 24 fatalities, 1,497 injuries that involved 5,057 vehicles, with an estimated $13,033,728 in property damages.

Everyone can help reduce these numbers by taking the following actions:
bullet

Drive Carefully - Concentrate on driving. Use seat belts. Don’t speed.

bullet

Don’t Take Chances - Play it safe! Don’t try to "beat the light, or train, or truck". Do not drink and drive.

bullet

Think Behind the Wheel - Be aware of transportation limitations. Large trucks take longer to stop. Pedestrians may not move fast. A bicyclist may not be aware of your approach. Children may not realize the dangers of traffic.

bullet

Turn on Vehicle Headlights - between dusk and dawn and anytime visibility is reduced by rain, smoke, fog, etc.

bullet

Keep Vehicles in Good Mechanical Condition - by regularly checking brakes, tires, wipers, and other safety and operating equipment.

bullet

Property Owners Should Keep Vegetation Trimmed - to insure that good intersection and driveway sight distance is provided, and that traffic control signs are visible.

bullet

Report Roadway Hazards - as soon as possible to supervisors, city, county, or state officials responsible for road maintenance and safety. Roadway hazard examples:

bullet Traffic signs down or damaged.
bullet Traffic signal malfunctions.
bullet Traffic controls or intersections obstructed by vegetation.
bullet Obstructions, potholes, bumps or dips in roadway.
bullet Shoulder erosion.
bullet Water ponding on roadway.

bullet

Report Acts of Vandalism - to law enforcement and maintenance officials.
