Adopt-A-Road Program Adopt-A-Road designates certain road sections for private assistance with litter removal. Besides presenting a poor appearance, litter and trash can cause traffic hazards and affect drainage. Adopt-A-Road allows citizens to demonstrate community pride, make a positive statement for a clean, attractive community and help the county reduce costs. Hernando County's Adopt-A-Road program began August 8, 1989. When Hernando County joined the nationwide program, it was only the second county in the State of Florida to do so. Currently, there are 75 active groups in Hernando County. Commitment
Your business or community group can help keep roads litter-free by "adopting" one of the approved sections of road. Each group adopts a 2 mile section of roadway and signs an agreement to clean up the litter at least 6 times a year. The County's Adopt-A-Road program does not included any state or federal highways, it is for county-maintained roads only. Safety
The County Department of Public Works furnishes the safety training, two white on blue adopt-a-road signs (stating the volunteer groups name), "litter crew on road" signs, safety vests, and trash bags. Only those sections of road considered safe for volunteer litter removal are approved for adoption. Recognition
Adopt-A-Road signs are placed at each end of the selected roadway, giving recognition to the group and reminding people not to litter. If desired, the program offers an installation ceremony and publicity at the time the signs are installed. When the cleanup is completed, the group notifies the Public Works Department which dispatches a truck to pick up and dispose of the bags filled with trash. Participate
Ideally, we would like to see littering stop, but you can help keep our road sides clean and attractive by participating in Adopt-A-Road. For more information contact
