The Board of County Commissioners appoints citizens to various boards, committees and authorities which are related to County government activities.  Membership on these boards is voluntary and involves no remuneration.    

In addition to the Boards listed below, there are various task forces which are disbanded when their task is completed.  For more information on the function of these boards or to submit a name for appointment, call the County Administrator's Office at (352) 754-4000.  Membership application forms are available in the County Administrator's Office.  Serving as a member on one of these boards or committees is an excellent way to become involved in your county and learn more about County Government.   Below is a listing and brief description of the various boards and committees associated with County Government.

AVIATION AUTHORITY

PURPOSE : Develops and administers rules and regulations for the Hernando County Airport.

BOARD of CONSTRUCTION and REGULATION

PURPOSE:  Conducts informal hearings involving contractor licensing regulations, conducts hearings for appeals of decisions and interpretations of the building official, and serves as the county-wide compliance review board to hear appeals as to technical amendments of the Hernando County Construction Code.

Development Department

Citizens Advisory Task Force for the Small Cities
 Community Development Block Grant Program
PURPOSE: The purpose of the CDBG Citizens Advisory Task Force is to encourage community members and residents, particularly low and moderate income persons who reside in blighted areas of the County, to provide input relative to all phases of the project process. The members will also assist local government staff and/or consultant in overseeing the project, including development of plans, procedures, public hearings and amendments, if necessary. The positions are open for residents of Hernando County who are interested in providing input relative to all phases of the Community Development Block Grant application and process.

ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE LANDS COMMITTEE

PURPOSE: Short Term: To review and make recommendations to the BOCC regarding the Sensitive Lands Manual prepared by the County Planning Staff Long Term: To review and make recommendations to the BOCC regarding potential sensitive lands acquisition by the County

FINE ARTS COUNCIL

PURPOSE: Supports groups associated with the arts; sponsors the annual Masaryktown Arts Festival.

LIBRARY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

PURPOSE: Acts as a liaison between the public and the BOCC on matters relating to the Library System

PERSONNEL ADVISORY BOARD

PURPOSE: Provides recommendations to the BOCC on matters regarding employee relations and conducts hearings on employee grievances

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION

PURPOSE: Acts as an advisory board to the BOCC with regard to re-zonings and other land use issues.  Also acts as the Local Planning Agency and Land Development Regulation Commission.
