County Administrator

Introducing Leonard B. Sossamon . .

 .

Mr. Sossamon's first day as Hernando County Administrator was Monday, May 21, 2012. He brings more than 20 years of  local government experience with focused expertise in economic development, community development, financial operations and organizational change and development. 

Mr. Sossamon earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and his Master's Degree in Urban Geography from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, in 1975 and 1978, respectively. In addition to his formal education, Mr. Sossamon graduated from the Institute of Government at UNC, Chapel Hill, North Carolina and the South Carolina Executive Institute, Columbia, South Carolina. His Master's Thesis was published by "The Professional Geographer".

From 1980-1985, Mr. Sossamon was the Planning and Community Development Director for the City of Concord, North Carolina. In 1985, he was appointed as City Manager and served in that position until 1998. Mr. Sossamon served as the County Administrator for the Newberry County, South Carolina, from 2004-2006.  He also served as Planning and Community Development Director for Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina from 1977-1980.

Married for 40 years, Leonard and Esther Sossamon have no children but enjoy several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. They look forward to settling down in Hernando County after her retirement from AT&T within the next year. Until then, Mr. Sossamon lives in Brooksville and enjoys the occasional drive back and forth to Concord, North Carolina.

The County Administrator is the Chief Administrative Officer appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. It is the responsibility of the County Administrator to effectively implement all decisions, policies, ordinances and motions made by the Board of County Commissioners. The County Administrator performs these responsibilities through the various department directors and administrative personnel, who report directly to the County Administrator.
