Public Meetings and Open Houses

The development and implementation of new FEMA Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs) is a formal process with an official Government Staff and General Public review process. When the Preliminary FEMA DFIRMs have been developed they are provided to Hernando County Government by FEMA for an initial 30 day review period. At the end of this time the County will organize and host a number of Public meetings to introduce and explain the FEMA adoption process, provide an opportunity for the Public to review the maps and obtain specific information regarding their property and to initiate a 90 day appeals and protest period. The adoption of the new FEMA DFIRMs takes place when all of the appeals and protests have been resolved. The length of this resolution process is dependant on the number of cases and the duration and number of judicial appeals that are filed.

Public meetings - SWFWMD

As preliminary flood risk information is developed for a watershed, the Southwest Florida Water Management District is conducting public meetings so that citizens can learn about the data and science used to determine the flood hazard areas, view the preliminary floodplain results, and have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments. Property owners effected by flood mapping changes will be notified of upcoming meetings by postcard .

Watershed floodplains under development: Crews Lake Outlet, Squirrel Prairie and Peck Sink.

For information regarding upcoming meetings please contact
