History of the
Hernando County Fire Department

Before the
Hernando County Fire Rescue District became one agency, there were six
separate fire departments in the county.
Hernando County Fire Rescue
District was established in October 1, 2000 with the combining of North West
Fire Department, North East Fire District, East Hernando Fire Department and
South Central Fire District. Along with the combining of these fire districts
the Advanced Life Support (EMS) Transport service for the area was also absorbed
into the fire department. Along with the fire coverage area, HCFRD - EMS division
also services Brooksville city, High Point, Nobleton and Hernando Beach.
Hernando County
Fire Rescue, provides proficient and cost effective fire prevention,
fire suppression, pre-hospital emergency medical basic life support , non-transport
and transport advance life support services, and hazardous materials response
within the 419 square mile fire service area, and within Hernando County.

Hernando County Fire Coverage
Hernando County is subdivided into 16 fire districts. Two career fire departments
and three volunteer departments and one combination fire department cover
the fire districts. Hernando County is 506 square miles.
