Fertilizers and pesticides from residential areas can be a serious threat to the health of Florida’s water and diverse ecosystems. Hernando County established Florida Yards and Neighborhoods (FYN) to address the problems of pollution and disappearing habitats by enlisting homeowners in the battle to save our natural environment.

As our communities have grown, the amount of storm water pollution has increased, along with our use of freshwater resources for drinking water. This program provides specialized educational and outreach activities for homeowners, contractors, lawn and landscape industry representatives to help reduce pollution and enhance their environment by improving home and landscape management practices. FY&N encourages homeowners to water efficiently, mulch, recycle yard wastes, select the least toxic pest control measures, put the right plant in the right spot, fertilize only when necessary, and minimize storm water runoff.

Whether you take care of our own yard or contract a professional service, you can play an important role in reducing storm water runoff pollution, protecting water quality and conserving our valuable water and natural resources.
