Seniors Living Well
This is a three part program
targeted at senior citizens and baby boomers that focuses on housing
issues that allow seniors to "age well in place", consumer fraud and
the older citizen, and concerns about funerals, with emphasis on buying
caskets. The series is offered in the summer and again in the fall.
Consumer Choices
The Consumer Choices program
consists of six- weekly ninety minute classes that focus on teaching
youth the skills and knowledge needed to become better consumers. The
series is offered from January through February for youth ages 8-18
in preparation for the Consumer Judging event held at the Central Florida
Fair.
World’s Greatest Baby Shower
Cooperative Extension (Family
and Consumer Sciences) is a leading agency in a coalition of ten county
non-profit organizations that plans and organizes this program each
year. The event allows 150-300 pregnant and new moms to become aware
of services and resources available to them.
Home and Community Educators
HCE
(formerly Extension Homemakers) is a grass roots organization which
had its beginning 75 years ago. It is made up of volunteers who receive
no payment for their efforts. They are concerned with family and community
issues and through projects and the dissemination of educational information,
help other people improve their lives. Hernando County HCE members are
responsible for all the adult open class exhibits at the County Fair,
as well as providing a lot of work needed to assure the World’s Greatest
Baby Shower is a yearly success.
One of the
Home and Community Educators special projects is the collection of pop
tabs in support of the Ronald McDonald House in Gainesville, Florida.
Many local community organizations have joined in on this effort and
made the collection program a big success.
