4-H Community Clubs
These general and specialty clubs have more than 500 youth
members and a large number of supporting adult volunteers. Special interest clubs include:
horse, horticulture, marine science, poultry, sewing, shooting sports, steer, swine, wildlife
and more. 4-H clubs provide diverse, enjoyable educational experiences and hands-on learning
opportunities that give youth productive things to do with their leisure time.
County 4-H School Enrichment Programs
Approximately 1,588 (10%) of the county’s urban and rural
school age youth are involved in 4-H and youth related educational activities. Popular
programs requested by the schools are: embryology, gardening programs, money and credit,
seat belt safety, career exploration and after school educational programming. We provide
teacher guides, materials, equipment and support upon request.
County Fair Youth Livestock Shows and Youth Exhibits
Provide management and support for youth shows and exhibits
at the county fair including: steer, swine, poultry, rabbits, beef heifers, dairy heifers,
goats, arts & crafts, needlework, clothing, science exhibits, club exhibits, plants, baked
goods, fashion show and more.
Youth Leadership/Citizenship Training and Community Service
Projects
Programs for youth on "What Makes a Leader" & "Why Leadership
is Important," as well as planned opportunities for community service and training on
citizenship and teamwork, are designed to help build strong and productive citizens. 4-H
Legislature takes youth to our state capitol as legislators, lobbyists, and reporters
to learn hands-on how our state laws are made. 4-H Congress at the University of Florida
brings youth together for leadership and life skills learning each summer. 4-H Congress
is a one week trip to Gainesville for senior 4-H members who have excelled in a project
area.
4-H Camping Programs
Numerous summer day camps for junior and senior members
provide hands-on life skills training and experiential learning here in Hernando County.
Week long camps are held in the Ocala National Forest featuring
environmental education for 8-12 year olds and leadership, citizenship, stewardship and
camp counselor training for youth 13-18 years of age. We also have week-long camps in
horsemanship, shooting sports, and marine science.
Area C Horse Show
Planning and organization begins in January to bring this
4-H district wide horse show to Hernando County in May. This event is a qualifier for
competitors to move on to the state level.
4-H Foundation
4-H Foundation members are an active board of volunteers
that plan fund-raisers, such as an annual auction. Their efforts provide thousands of
dollars yearly for program support and youth scholarships.
Leader’s Training Meetings
The Leader’s Association is organized to provide monthly
continuing training to volunteer 4-H leaders and provide an opportunity to share ideas
and experiences with other leaders and staff.
Judging Events
Hernando County 4-H members participate in numerous judging
events on the county, district and state levels. Major emphasis is placed on horse, hippology,
livestock and consumer judging.
Community Outreach
The 4-H Agent and Program Assistant honor requests from
county residents, civic clubs and private schools for speakers, educational programming
and materials.
